Willow Residence
We were inspired by our clients to design additional, updated living space while maintaining the original flavor of their traditional 60s ranch home in this established neighborhood. Quite typical of this era, the 1300 sf existing home included small bedrooms and baths and a substandard master bedroom.
Rather than expand into the established garden and outdoor space, which the owners wanted to keep, we decided to go up. In doing so, we were able to take advantage of more natural light and the undeniable great views of Grizzly Peak to the north.
By increasing the main level 300 SF, we were able to enlarge the kitchen and add an office off the kitchen. This added space also allowed us to create an open floor plan for the kitchen, dining and living space as well as enlarge the master bedroom and bath. The added 600 SF upper floor serves as a family and media entertainment area, including a refreshment bar. This space also serves as a secondary office.
The overall design took into consideration the street presence in this unassuming neighborhood. We introduced a new roof design by contrasting the upper roof form with the original ranch style and we were able to nestle the upper addition further from the street. The new shed roof form is minimally echoed on the main level and over the entry to create a welcoming front porch.
